The Success of Dick DeVos

Dick DeVos is a member of the DeVos family, a prominent family that currently resides in West Michigan and is known for not only their success within the world of business, but is also known for their generous donations that have made out to charities across the United States that have the end goal of improving lives. The DeVos family has a building reputation that was put on the map ever since Richard DeVos founded Amway Corporation, a company that specializes in selling household products worldwide. Richard DeVos not only grew the legacy of the DeVos family, but also inspired his son to one day become the leader of the company and to demonstrate his natural leadership that has inspired so many already. Dick DeVos has the goal to not only continue building Amway Corporation, but also has the end goal of helping many others along the way.

Dick DeVos, like his father, is a charitable individual who has given millions of dollars to worthy organizations in communities across the United States. Dick DeVos has supported religious initiatives, artistic, civil, as well as educational initiatives. Education is one of Dick DeVos’ passions because he believes that hard work and knowledge combined is a lethal combination that can lead to economic growth and the improvement of lives. Dick DeVos believes that educational opportunities should be based upon merit and not based on the income of a family. Thanks to Dick DeVos and Betsy DeVos, many scholarships have been created and schools have been built in their names.

In 2010, Dick DeVos funded the building of the West Michigan Aviation Academy, a school that has already offered a quality education to thousands of students. Dick DeVos even partnered with several universities to allow for students of the West Michigan Aviation Academy to automatically have acceptance to certain four-year colleges. Dick DeVos has always appreciated the value of an education and has now given the opportunity to others to do the same. This is just one of the many examples of how Dick DeVos has provided a quality education to those who desire one, yet cannot afford it.

The DeVos family is known for their billions of dollars of contributions to communities. As a member of this family, Dick DeVos has donated millions of his own funds in order to help build communities. For future plans, Dick DeVos wants to continue to create scholarships as well as schools that can offer and encourage individuals to receive a quality education. Dick DeVos believes that knowledge is key to build the economy and hopes that the forty years of generous donations that he has given will continue to pay off for the future to come along with the individuals.

A Candid Interview with the education reformer, Betsy DeVos

Betsy DeVos has been an inspiration to the community with her philanthropic efforts in the field of education. Through the years Betsy and her husband Dick DeVos have been instrumental in changing the lives of school going students across America.

In a candid interview with Betsy, she shared with me among many things her goals and reforms to bring about a positive change in our educational institutes. Being parents to school going kids back in the 90’s, Betsy felt the need for low income group families to have the choice and freedom to send their kids to the schools of their liking. The school voucher program started out as a small initiative supporting individual kids and now has grown into full proportion. Betsy was elated upon being asked on the Wisconsin instituted private school voucher program in Milwaukee which celebrated its 25th year in 2013. She gave estimated figures for the school voucher initiative that the DeVos family helped start. The program has expanded to more than 2,50,000 students in 33 publicly funded, private choice programs in 17 states. The program expanded to cities like Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Mississippi and New Hampshire. The greatest achievement for the program came with the passing of the Statewide Voucher program in Indiana which paved the way for similar reforms in other states of America. In her capacity, Betsy served as chairman of two boards namely Children First America and the American Education Reform Council wherein she and her husband Dick were instrumental in passing Michigan’s first charter school bill in 1993. The Great Lakes Education Project was started when Betsy’s tax-credit scholarship and vouchers program failed to take flight. The response for the Great Lakes Education was tremendous which promoted education reform through expansion of charter schools. The success of the program further lead to the formation of the American Federation for Children (AFC) which has been largely successful in promoting educational choices for students and providing better options. The state of Florida, Louisiana and Indiana have largely benefited from the tax credit scholarship program started by the AFC. Betsy sees the need for more education reform strategies and when quizzed about digital learning, Betsy said that digital learning has still a long way to go in terms of its implementation in the current education system and if given the right path, can be even instrumental in boosting education and learning.

Dick DeVos has been a key figure in the business community. He is a second generation entrepreneur who took over his father’s business in growing the Amway Corporation. He started working in the company in 1974 and has been successful in transitioning the network sales company to bigger avenues. His effort in the restructuring of the company has led to the growth of the Amway Corporation across the globe. Dick and his partner Betsy have been involved with philanthropic initiatives since a long time spearheading the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation which is committed to helping the community.

Dick DeVos’ Political History

Many people are aware of the long and effective work history that belongs to billionaire philanthropist Dick DeVos. DeVos is known primarily for his successful leadership of the multi-level marketing company, Amway. Amway was started by Dick DeVos Sr. and later passed on to Dick DeVos Jr. Although he did not originally found the company, Dick DeVos was extremely instrumental in developing Amway into a internationally recognized brand. The businessman gained a large amount of fame through his successful development of Amway, but DeVos worked equally as hard in his political career. Dick Devos began his career in politics in the late 1980s and has continued to be extremely active in the political arena for several decades.

Dick DeVos began his political career by entering the race for the Michigan State Board of Education. In future years, the educational sector of the political arena would prove to be an area to which Devos and his family were extremely devoted. DeVos launched a successful campaign for a membership to the Michigan State Board of Education and was elected the position after the election in 1990. Although Devos was extremely passionate about the educational development in the state of Michigan, the businessman was forced to resign from the position two years after being elected to the board. He stated that his resignation was the result of his increased responsibilities as the new chief executive officer at Amway. Five years later, when the businessman had become more settled in his responsibilities with his company, Dick DeVos returned to his position on the Michigan educational school board.

After several years of serving his community faithfully on the state educational board, Devos decided to expand his political ambitions. Both Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy had an extreme passion for the proper education of students in the United States. This passion led the couple to found the Educational Freedom Fund, an organization that provided funds to underprivileged children to attend private schools. The Devos family felt that the public educational system in Michigan was severely under equipped and decided to devote their political careers to the ratification of this injustice. After creating the Educational Freedom Fund in the early 1990s, DeVos made his largest political move to date and entered the 2006 Michigan Gubernatorial race. The businessman felt that he could contribute a great deal of expertise and skill to the state he loved. Though DeVos lost the race, he continues to be active in the political arena.

Philanthropy and Bruce Levenson’s Profound Contribution To It

Bruce Levenson is a nationally-known figure because of his ownership of a prominent NBA team. But, according to PR Newswire, this isn’t the only thing everyone in America should know Bruce for. Three years ago, Bruce and Karen Levenson made some substantial donations to the University of Maryland. This culminated in creation of The Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at the University of Maryland, a center from which are regularly recruited personnel by prominent D.C. nonprofit groups. Readers may recognize the Marriott Foundation and the Smithsonian. Both organizations regularly recruit from The Center at the University of Maryland. It makes sense why, also. Said center is regularly involved in drumming up financial support for organizations involved in nonprofit pursuits that are worthy. Every semester some ten thousand dollars is raised and distributed. Altogether that’s $20,000 a year, and growth seems the only likely future outcome. The Center has expanded enough a new dormitory has been added, and all students at the University of Maryland are regularly funneled through programs in The Center such that they come out with an appreciation for and understanding of philanthropic pursuit. And, according to Bruce Levenson of UCG, this is exactly as it should be. His goals are “…to ensure that every student attending the University of Maryland graduates as an informed and motivated philanthropist,” according to the PR Newswire article. Hopefully The Center will maintain its growth, and continue to positively impact not just the local Maryland community, or that of D.C., but the global community as well.
